Spring ahead time change does not apply to Cozumel

 

While it’s time to spring ahead, cities such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen do not observe Daylight Savings Time.

Throughout Mexico, 30 of the 32 states do observe the spring ahead, fall behind time changes, however the states of Sonora and Quintana Roo do not. During this time, vacationers in Cancun and Riviera Maya may have gotten up an hour earlier than thought assuming the spring ahead time change applied.

However, in 2015 the state of Quintana Roo opted out of the country’s DST regime. Following the establishment of its own time zone since 2015, Mexico’s easternmost state observes Eastern Standard Time (EST) year-round.



 

 

Green Bay Packers annual Legends cruise pulled into Cozumel for a beach party and competition in the sand!


American football team, Greenbay Packers, took to the beaches of Cozumel this week with friends and family during their annual Legends Cruise.

The entire NFL team with their friends, families and onboard cruise fans made the stop to enjoy the charms of the island of Cozumel. Packer players attracted even more fans once they hit the beaches and were recognized by locals and other tourists.

National Geographic working on Mayan Cozumel program


The production team of National Geographic have arrived on the island of Cozumel to begin working on a special program that will be part of their Mysteries of the Mayan Underworld project.

The team has spent many months focusing on five points between Quintana Roo and Yucatan since last year, putting together Mysteries of the Mayan Underworld.

The production team is on the island of Cozumel in search of Maya archaeological sites and beaches to be added to the framework of a special feature Cozumel 500 years: Encounter between two cultures. The scouting being done on the island will result in a program called The Great Mayan Route.

Miguel Galvez, producer of the project said that they look for Mayan archaeological sites and beach areas, as well as aspects related to maritime navigation in this area of the Caribbean since the main topic is navigation.

In Cozumel there are all the necessary characteristics to develop this part of the project. They will visit different archaeological monument, as well as cenotes and the vestiges that are on the south side of the island... READ MORE>>>


 


Expect crowds at 2018's most popular spring break destinations for U.S. travelers

Spring break is that long-awaited vacation time between late February and April when winter holiday weekends have run out and Memorial Day seems so far away. The most popular destinations for 2018 spring breakers look to be Orlando, Fla., in the U.S. and Cancun, Mexico, on the international front.
Travel insurance company Allianz Global Assistance tallied up where and when Americans plan to go between Feb. 23 and April 16, according to a news release. Last year, Orlando and Cancun also claimed the top spring break destinations.

Mexico’s Chedraui buys US Fiesta Mart


The recent purchase of the Fiesta Mart supermarket chain in the United States by Chedraui will allow the Mexican company to double its presence in that country and compete with local retailers that serve the Hispanic consumer.

Chedraui reported that one of its subsidiaries reached an agreement to acquire 63 Fiesta Mart branches in Texas, strengthening its presence in the Mexican-American consumer market.

“Currently, Chedraui operates 59 stores primarily in California and Arizona and, through the acquisition, will not only double its current footprint (in the US), the company will also enter a new state,” Barclays said in a document.

At the end of December 2017, the company had 59 branches of its El Super format in California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico, mainly, according to the company’s financial information.

For its part, the broker Citibanamex said that Chedraui would compete with local brands that serve the Hispanic consumer, including Mi Tienda, of HEB, as well as Joe V’s and El Rancho.

“The acquisition of Fiesta Mart balances Chedraui’s business in the US between Texas and California, potentially increasing the operating flow (EBITDA) in that country to 27 percent (against the current 17 percent), although it would dilute the group’s EBITDA margin by 60 points base,” said the financial group.
