Cozumel Living Supports Beach Clean-up efforts

The Trashy Little Group- please join Us!, held its March event on Wednesday March 22nd next to El Cantil Condominiums downtown. The site, which opens to the water, had became a dreadful eyesore especially with mounds of post Carnaval litter escaping the notice of street cleaners after this years Carnaval celebration. 17 members and a few passersby joined in the fun and cleaned 35 bags of trash from the oceanfront space. The after photos remind us all how nice our island can look when we take good care of it. March's lucky winners finding hidden treasures at the clean up site were Vianney Vivas, Ed Baxter, Kellie Oquist, and Susan Beech. Continued gratitude to Adrian Angulo who contributed a CASA DENIS gift certificate, as well as a free kite boarding lesson from top shop PURO MAR. Thanks also to Ellie Berglund who donated 2 of her charming flower hair accessories courtesy of Minneapolis based ELLIE BEA'S, and Susan found the $15 itunes gift card donated by group founder Kathy Watts. Aurelio Joaquin, the new Mayor of Cozumel
(2011-2015)

Aurelio Joaquin is taking the postion as the new Mayor of Cozumel on April 10th and his Cabinet for the period of 2011-2015 that will work with him are :

The General Secretary - Azueta Jorge Alberto Martin, who is Secretary of the PRI for the state.

Marilyn Rodriguez Marrufo, who is the deputy in the deputation of Freddy Marrufo, who will occupy the Administrative Office.

The "hot potato" will be Edwin González Argüelles, current administrative clerk responsible for the municipal treasury resources of the municipality.

The Department of Public Safety is another area difficult to manage and Eroza Rudy Navarrete, who has been in the administration of Juan Carlos Hernández Blanco (2003-2006),will handle this.

The mayor will create a General Tourism office, which will be held by Federico Ruiz Piña, who has already served in tourism in the 2006-2009 administration.

The Municipal Comptroller shall be Jaime Novelo López, Economic Development is Emilio Villanueva, who is currently in charge of the representative office of the State Government.

In the Public Works Department will be Miguel Salas and Urban Development, Carlos Pomola.

The controversial Office of Social Communication of the City will be the responsibility of Leon Leonora.

Aurelio Joaquin Gonzalez, announced that he will keep the following two people, Erick Salinas, stays as his private secretary, and Victor Hernández Luna, who will be the new spokesman of the Presidency.

Evelyn Paz Solis will deal with the Social Development Division. The Department of Sports will be headed by Esmeralda Barrera. Escalante Ricardo Lizama will remain in Zofemat and Ecology, will have Jose Luis Toledo in charge.

In the Technical Secretary office, Ricardo Espinoza Freyre will continue since he knows the area along with his team. The Municipal Land Office will continue with Amir Martin Mendoza, who knows this work, and is engaged in other parts of the administrations.

 




CEDRAL PARTY

Is from April 28th to May 3rd.
The historic festival is held in the small town of El Cedral on the south end of the island of Cozumel always in late April or early May. The celebration lasts about 5 days in total. This annual event began 150 years ago by Casimiro Cárdenas. Cardenas was a member of a group that fled to the island of Cozumel from the village of Saban after an attack during the Castas War. Cardenas' enemies killed another of his companions, but Cardenas survived the massacre, and this celebration is started with this group of family’s that arrived in Cozumel to celebrate the 1st Catholic Mass.

Legend has it that Cárdenas vowed to start an annual festival to honor the religious power of the crucifix. Until today, the Festival of Santa Cruzis, part of the wider festival Cedral, which includes fairs, traditional food, rodeos, cock fights, bull fights, music and competitions.

XL Rodeo de Lanchas Tournament

The Fishing Rodeo of Cozumel Tournament this year celebrates its 40th anniversary. Last year there were 163 boats of various sizes registered having prizes totaling one million and half pesos, where the captains and sailors were rewarded. This year celebrating its 40th anniversary, we expect more boats registered and all of the participants expect spectacular prizes as last year. This fishing tournament is one of the most important in the state of Quintana Roo and is recognized nationally as one of the best, which is attended by fishermen and amateur sportsmen, women, foreigners, or nationals. Anyone can participate with a vessel registered in Mexico.

Carolyn Sherman share at CZM4YOU.- For a great Snorkel, try the roped off area to the right of the Money Bar-we've seen rays, barracudas, octopus, turtles, crabs, lobsters -you name it! Snorkel all the way to the other end of the ropes and don't forget to circle around the rocks and coral formations-that's where most of the critters are hanging out. Enjoy! Also Punta Sur Park has a great long reef to explore. Costs money to get in, but well worth it!

Dear .....

My name is Henry Altman. I am an American and I now own Mexico!

Fact is, I have not only a passion for Mexico but I also have a commercial interest in the country as well. While Mexico has had its media challenges, the TRUTH is 99% of Mexico is safe to visit, but the US media continues to do a great job sensationalizing the 1% that has security issues. In my 30 years of business internationally and domestically I have learned one thing about the US media - they do a much better job "pointing out the issues in Mexico while ignoring that the greater half of Mexico's problems are due to the USA drug dependency and US citizens acting as "straw buyers" at gun shows and gun stores across America supplying the cartels with high caliber firearms at great profits.

Why does the US media 'flog' Mexico with negative stories?

Mexico poses a huge threat to the United States: It is predicted that the largest migration of USA immigrants in history will occur over the next 15 years and the loss of US tax revenue and the impact to the GDP will be staggering. The media campaign you see on TV is more about the USA economic war than it is about the drug war in my opinion. As our closest neighbor to the south we can not continue to take half step measures to help insure Mexico's security and our own when our country is fueling the cartels appetite for cash by purchasing their drugs. Could this be the reason for the US-Mexico media flogging campaign, or is there another reason for the US wanting to create fear in the hearts and minds of Americans?

Here is some food for thought; if the US was a corporation, (which it is) and you owned it, the last thing you would want is 5 million of your customers going to your closest competitor (Mexico). By the way if you did not know it Mexico does have better weather, beach front real estate at a 60% discount in many areas, low property taxes (10% of the USA), great food, quality medical services and assisted health care services for a fraction of the price. All of this now having been said, the most important thing to remember, is that the people of Mexico and their culture are as warm and beautiful as their beaches and mountains. If you are a serious buyer NOW is the time to take advantage of the lowest prices on prime investment grade real estate regardless of the US media agenda. At the end of the day one positive piece of news has come of this 'flogging' and that is Mexico real estate is 'on-sale'...in many cases at ½ the price from 3 years ago.
