Cozumel researchers to begin roadkill study

Researchers on the island of Cozumel say they are going to begin monitoring the areas where animals are most often killed by motorists.

Alfredo Báez Meléndez of the Management of Natural Resources Isla Cozumel, says they are going to begin a study to monitor the animals being killed on the main roads of the island. He says the results of the study will be used to update the information on causes of wildlife deaths across Cozumel.

Báez Meléndez said that during 2017, more than 300 animals were accounted for as being run over by motorists along city roads. He says a majority of the deaths occurred on the transverse highway and in hotel areas, adding drivers need to move about with greater care.

He reported that of the 300 known animal deaths last year, 70 percent were birds that were hit by cars, while the remaining 30 percent were mammals and reptiles.

What is the Current Seaweed Situation on Cozumel Beaches?

 

Summer 2018 Update. The East side (wild side) of Cozumel that goes from the north lighthouse Punta Molas to the South lighthouse in Punta Sur has beaches completely Seaweed free, other beaches have quite an amount of Seaweed. So when you visit Cozumel and really want to disconnect on the Wild Side of the island, you will absolutely be able to find great spots not only without cell phone reach but also without Seaweed. No worries!

We reported some Seaweed on the beaches in the North West side of the island, but the quantity is minimal. You might see some Seaweed floating by, though it is still an absolute pleasure to be at the oceanside.

NO US TRAVEL WARNING- TRAVEL INCREASES

International travel figures have increased this year for Cancun and Riviera Maya with Houston, Chicago and Toronto leading the way. Marisol Vanegas, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, announced that in the first four months of 2018, figures from the General Directorate of Civil Aviation reported an increase in international and domestic passengers.

He says the United States, Canada, Argentina, the United Kingdom and Brazil continue to be the main markets for international tourists for the region. He added that for the US market, the total number of passengers from Houston increased 3.8 percent with an increase of 1.9 percent from Chicago. The Toronto-Cancun route, he noted, saw the largest increase of 14.5 percent in passenger volume.

According to a statement, the recent US Department of State Travel Advisory update issued by the US government says that as of July 16, the state of Quintana Roo maintains a Level 2 travel alert, the same level as other popular destinations including Berlin, London and Paris. According to the US update, although crime rates saw an increase since 2016, they say it is targeted toward criminal organizations adding, “There are no restrictions for US government employees traveling to Quintana Roo, which includes tourist areas such as Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya.”
