Record effort by group individuals bolsters the Trashy Group's 2012 Bag Counter

Individual efforts throughout November from the Beachhouse Hostel Cleanup, the Ranchitos Kids Party event, Bob Ellinghuysen, Janie Robertson, and Nancy and Bill from the Cozumel Living Team added another 42 bags to the 2012 bag counter - a record month for individual efforts! Thanks to one and all who take a little time out of the month to help keep Cozumel clean.

Cozumel's Trashletes picked up a wooping 30 double bags of trash off the beach just south of Mezcalitos at the November Trashy Little Event, on Sunday November 18th. It was a perfect day for picking up trash, and waving to the Ironmen and women whizzing past as they practiced for their big race. The TRASHATHON continued all afternoon for 2 group members who added another 19 bags, for a total of 79 bags into the counter at the end of the day. Special thanks to hidden treasure sponsors for November: The Magic of Design, Chocolates Kaokao Damarsicheli, Guido's Restaurante, La Choza, The fine shops of Cariloha and Del Sol, BoBs Cozumel, Rock n Java, Erika Armas of Cozumel Relaxing Skincare, and Cesar's Pizza.

The final group event for 2012 will be Sunday December 9th. Find all the details and join the effort by finding the Trashy Little Group on facebook.

As Of November 21:
That makes 815 Bags into the Bag Counter so far this year.
We still need 185 to reach our goal.

CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS IN MEXICO

December 12th is one of the most popular celebrations in Mexico and Cozumel . The Cozumeleños are devotees of the Virgin of Guadalupe and every year bring the celebration throughout the island in Cozumeleño style. The celebration begins on the first day of December with a pilgrimage around the island by various groups of religious organizations and non-religious, to church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

" The Posadas"

Posada is the most beautiful festival of the year end celebrated in Mexico and in every Latin American country. The tradition re-inacts the crossing of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of an inn where the Virgin could give birth to the son of God.
The modern day posada reinactment represents nine inns that are visited requesting lodging from December 16 that symbolizes the road to Bethlehem to the birth of Jesus on the 24th.

In the old Mexicans celebrated in the winter epoch, the arrival of "Huitzilopochtli", God of
War, that occurred in the month called "Panquetzaliztli", corresponding to the Julian calendar (ancestor of the Gregorian calendar that is based on the movement of the Sun to measure time) to the interval of time from the 7th of December to December 26th, the season that coincided with the European practice of celebrating Christmas.

The Agustinos were established in the small town of San Augustine Acolman, situated to the northwest of Mexico City, on the road to Teotihuacan. In this place the practice of the inns was originated, in 1587 Fray Diego of Soria obtained from the Pope Sixto V, permission to celebrate in New Spain the masses of Christmas called the Mass of Rooster, from December 16th to December 24th carried out in the church and this was the start of the Posadas. Among these mass passages were interspersed with the scenes of Christmas. They added to the Christmas celebration flares, rockets, piñatas and Mexican carols.

Mayan Calendar - A New Beginning

Much has been said about the importance of the Mayan Calendar and 2012. The calendar's end-date of Dec. 21, 2012 has even been considered an ancient warning marking the end of the world.

What is important to notice is that the Mayan Calendar ends in the winter solstice of 2012. This is around the time of Christmas and re-birth of the Sun. So rather than viewing this date as an end, many are using this 2012 date to represent a time when a new cycle will begin.

To understand the Mayan Calendar is to know it's nature of endless cycles. BUT that doesn't make this "end-date" of 2012 any less significant. In fact, it represents a time of great renewal. Contrary to what is often believed it definitely doesn't mean imminent DOOMSDAY or the END DAYS.
