DAY OF THE VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE

December 1 to 12 Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most popular celebrations in Mexico and Cozumel. The Cozumeleños are devotees of the Virgin of Guadalupe and every year bring the celebration throughout the island in Cozumeleño style. The celebration begins on the first day of December with a pilgrimage around the island by various groups of religious organizations and non-religious, to church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

On December 9, groups embark on another pilgrimage to the church and celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving. The festivities continue with a race around the island on December 11, with the lively participation by adults, teenagers and children. The race starts in at the church and goes, across the island returning to the church in time to hold a festival full of delicious regional dishes, folk dances and musical performances. The celebration includes mariachi bands that sing throughout the day to the Virgin, patroness of Mexico.

The month of December in Mexico is a month very important for all Christians, and is a month that Cozumeleneos celebrate the birth of Christ all month long. The feast begins with nine inns starting on 12/16 and finishing on December 24. These celebrations are accompanied with caroling, punch, piñatas, and sweets. The final feast on the 24th ends with a delicious dinner, and gifts welcoming the birth of Christ.
Remember that this is a time to celebrate but also to give thanks and for togetherness with your family.
