Trashy Group exceeds its 1000 bag goal for 2012
On December 9th The December Trashy Event dumped 85 bags into the 2012 bag counter! It was a beautiful morning - thank you to everyone who made
it out, and special thanks to our generous gift sponsors: Guidos, La Choza, BoBs Cozumel (reopening soon!) Burritos Gorditios (now serving grilled CHICKEN to die for) Pizza Cesar, Cariloha and Del Sol Shops, The Magic of Design, 4 Hands R Better Massage, Cozumel Bar Hop, Tia Balamcita Wilke (for her lovely jewelry designs), and Erika Armas (for her handmade bracelets and generous discounts on services to Trashy Group members at Cozumel Relaxing Skincare )
HUGE NEWS!!! On Dec 10 the bag counter sky-rocketed to well beyond our 1000 bag goal! Pam and Jim Miller have adopted 3 vacant lots in their neighborhood, cleared them, put in curbs and fencing, and made their entire street look healthy and beautiful. The best part? They conservatively estimate 300 (standard 30 gallon) bags of trash and debris have been removed. We gratefully acknowledge their massive contribution to the Bag Counter! Thanks so much Pam and Jim - a fine example to follow.
Through these efforts along with other group members individual contributions, we have 1256 Bags into the Bag Counter for 2012. Special thanks go out to Elisa Fernanda Martinez Arteaga and PASA for their support in hauling away the trash bags for us all year - we could not succeed without their partnership. We are also very thankful to Toño Lopez and Canal 5 News for their promotion of the group's efforts. When we strive together there is nothing we cannot accomplish.
Congratulations Trashy Group on reaching and exceeding our 1000 bag goal. 2013 holds great promise for us all. We invite you to join the Trashy Little Group on facebook and be a part of a stronger community and a cleaner Cozumel.

CARNAVAL 2013

Pre-Carnaval events begin in early January and Carnaval itself starts just a few weeks later!!
Residents and visitors can look forward to bright costumes, lively dances and colorful floats for the main parade which heads down the "Malecon" or boardwalk along the downtown beachfront. In Cozumel, the costumes and dancing take on a somewhat Mayan theme, reflecting the island's heritage. Of course, there will also be lots of music and dancing, and plenty of great food.
In Cozumel, the festival has over 130 years of history and it's one of the best Carnival festivals in the region!
Carnaval officially begins 2/6/2013 with parades Saturday 2/9 at 6:00pm, Sunday 2/10 at 6:00pm, and the Final Mardi Gras Parade at 6:00pm on Tuesday 2/12
For information on events and dates please keep checking:

Poinsettias during the Winter Holiday Season

Poinsettia plants are native to Central America, especially an area of southern Mexico known as 'Taxco del Alarcon' where they flower during the winter. The poinsettia was made widely known because of a man called Joel Roberts Poinsett.
Poinsett had some greenhouses on his plantations in South Carolina, and while visiting the Taxco area in 1828, he became very interested in the plants.
He immediately sent some of the plants back to South Carolina, where he began growing the plants and sending them to friends and botanical gardens. Robert Buist was probably the first person to have sold the poinsettias under their botanical, or latin name, name 'Euphorbia pulcherrima' (it means, 'the most beautiful Euphorbia'). It is thought that they became known as Poinsettia in the mid 1830's when people found out who had first brought them to America from Mexico.
