Mexico’s cultural tourism on the rise with Quintana Roo leading

Cultural tourism is on the rise in Mexico, with nearly 80 percent of visitors booking a cultural tour while on holidays. Cultural tourism in the country is gaining ground, says the undersecretary of tourism, adding that Mexico is seen as a multicultural country.

According to Salvador Sánchez Estrada, Undersecretary of Planning and Tourism for Mexico, the country possesses enormous archaeological, gastronomic and cultural wealth adding that culture doubles the average spending of visitors.

“It is the highest average expense segment, doubling sun and beach tourism, with gastronomy being a decisive factor for a trip. Almost 80 percent of leisure travelers book activities linked to culture during their stays,” he said.

He explained that the cultural tourism offer of Mexico is composed of 34 sites declared as World Heritage with 189 archaeological zones open to the public. The country also offers 111 Magical Towns, towns noted for their natural beauty, 174 religious shrines, 1,120 museums and a diverse range of gastronomy options.

“Mexico is recognized as a multicultural country with traits that encompass the arts, traditions and gastronomy, as well as our ethnic groups, popular religious festivals and all those other traits that leave a mark from each generation,” he said.

Sánchez Estrada added that during 2017, Mexico received 39.3 million international tourists.

Free Google Station WiFi launched throughout Mexico including Cancun Airport

Google has launced its Google Station to nearly 60 locations throughout Mexico including the Cancun International Airport. The new launch means free public WiFi in key, high-traffic areas.

Free WiFi, powered by Google, is available at almost 60 public venues across the country in partnership with local ISP Sitwifi. While this is Google’s third launch of the station, it is the first in Latin America.

“Google Station will launch in Mexico initially with 56 points, the idea is to gradually grow and reach more cities and more spaces,” Miguel Ángel Alva, Marketing Director for Google Mexico.

Google Station offers high speed connection in public places such as shopping centers, airports and bus stations via WiFi. The concept is part of the company’s Next Billion Users global initiative that today, employs more than 400.

CIMAC, one of the local ecology groups, just finished 2 months of beach cleanups involving the local middle school youth. They picked up 619 kilograms of garbage!
