Tourism and Economic Status

Cozumel's tourism economy has suffered greatly from recent media reports of drug violence and the H1N1 virus in Mexico (Cozumel having ZERO reports of either). Local food drives, social security concessions, and a local petition to the CDC have helped in sustaining our community of innocent bystanders. Remembering the hurricanes, Cozumeleños will again show their resiliency facing these tough economic times. Calm and prepared, we look towards the return of tourism in great numbers.

Cozumel Boat Rodeo and Fishing Tournament

Cozumel's 38th Annual sport fishing tournament went off without a hitch! The final day started out rainy. As the skies cleared Sunday May 17, locals gathered near the ferry pier for the big weigh in. The charm of Cozumel shined the brightest that day with tourism at its lowest. Families and children swam and played on the normally crowded oceanfront of downtown. Buyers and sellers littered the streets with fists full of fresh cuts and festive offerings.
