Cruise company interested in building another dock at Cozumel


Cozumel, Q.R. — A study is being conducted for the possible addition of another ship dock at Cozumel due to the continued increase in cruise passengers.

According to statistics from the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo, more than 3.1 million cruise ship passengers have arrived on the island already this year. For this reason, representatives of two environmental organizations have been asked to analyze the possible construction of a fourth cruise terminal regarding the environmental impact for the island in its marine and terrestrial zones.

Both Noemí Guadalupe Martín Cab head of the Conservation, Research and Environmental Management of Cozumel and Guadalupe Álvarez Chulim de Azueta of Cielo, Tierra y Mar, highlighted their concern about the possibility of approving construction for a new port terminal. Both agreed that the population should be consulted and made aware of the characteristics of the project, the economic, social and environmental impacts as well as the generation of waste, mobility, transportation and the provision of public services.

Dive operator Dive Paradise Cozumel recently announced the beginning of its collaboration with the local nonprofit Cozumel Ocean Research (COR) focused on enhancing the organization’s efforts to gather valuable scientific data on Cozumel’s legendary marine environment.

Dive Paradise is dedicating the month of October to Cozumel Ocean Research, and to the knowledge gained via these programs which will be used by COR to design effective conservation and educational campaigns for Cozumel.

9TH ANNUAL IRONMAN TRIATHLON
Sunday, November 18th

This secluded gem of an island off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is a beloved destination for beach-goers and IRONMAN athletes alike.
Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, Cozumel is located 16 kilometers off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. Boasting the second largest barrier reef in the world, Cozumel has an international reputation as one of the premier diving destinations in the world. Thousands of divers and snorkelers visit every year to experience the 200 feet of visibility, countless species of fish, sponges, anemones and coral. If diving isn't up your alley, the island offers both adventure and relaxation at every turn: untrammeled jungle, white sand beaches, and a year-round Caribbean climate are just a few of the things athlete have to look forward to pre and post-race.
The two-transition course starts with a single-loop swim in water that is teeming with tropical fish within the protected waters of the Reefs of Cozumel National Park at Chankanaab Park Beach. The 180-kilometer, three-lap bike course in Cozumel is pancake-flat, taking competitors along the spectacular coastline of beaches and resorts and through the town of San Miguel de Cozumel. The three-loop run is lined with local supporters and bands playing traditional Mexican music, creating a festival-liked atmosphere. The finish line is at the city hall square in San Miguel de Cozumel, where local residents provide support to all finishers like they were seasoned veterans of IRONMAN spectating.

The 2018 IRONMAN Cozumel offers 40 qualifying slots for the 2019 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.


 


Cozumel will launch a book of the history of its Carnival

The creation of a book that compiles the history of the Carnival of Cozumel, has been announced by local authorities for the first months of January 2019. This Carnival is the most important popular festival of the island and it dates from 1874, only 26 years after the beginning of the repopulation of the insula. The intention is to print a high quality hard-cover book. Featuring high quality in both content and printing material.

The project is headed by Noemí Ruiz Piña, president of the board of administration of the FPMC and it is estimated that the the public announcement wil be made in February, and it is expected that Cozumel families and individuals can contribute with images and information that enrich this document with which it is sought to transcend borders.

Day of the Dead

 

October 31 - November 2

For the Day of the Dead special altars are designed using flowers, candles, and food. These altars are displayed in hotels, restaurants, and other public places as well as in private homes. Bakeries on the island get filled with traditional sweets, typically in shapes of skulls and flowers. Cemeteries receive huge amounts of flowers; the most popular are the famous marigold flowers or flores de cempasuchil, which represent the death.

 


Interdenominational English Language Worship Service every Sunday morning at 9 am at the Eben-ezer Presbyterian Church on 30 Av. at Calle 10 North. Tourists and residents always welcomed!
