TRASHY LITTLE GROUP

Hurricane Rina which passed by Cozumel as a Tropical Depression on October 28th, and left quite a bit to clean up in her wake. Therefore the Trashy Event for October was REMODELED into a different type of event. Due to changing weather conditions, plans, and canceled flights, this event was changed to an HONOR EVENT WEEKEND. Several members helped clean up their streets, neighbors, beaches and other local areas and collected several bags. Thankfully Rina spared us her worst, and as always, bad weather brings out the best in our Cozumeleño hearts and strong backs! The bag counter now stands at 562 bags of litter and beach trash cleaned up so far in 2011.

Day of the Dead in Mexico

"According to the belief of the ancient Mexican civilization, when the individual dies, his spirit continues to live in Mictlan, place of residence of souls who have left the earthly life. Benevolent gods created this great site that has nothing dark and rather quiet and pleasant, where souls rest peacefully until the day appointed by the custom, when returning to their former homes to visit their relatives. Although during that visit each other are not mutually they feel.

The ritual calendar indicates two times for the arrival of the dead. Each is a festival of joy and remembrance. No crying or pain, for no cause for sadness friendly visit of the deceased. The exaggerated Mexican hospitality is proverbial. This is manifested at the slightest provocation, even if visitors are deceased relatives. We must delight them and leave them satisfied with everything that is in your best pleasure and amazement, the food.

From remote times to the present, the "mortuary feast," shines on all domestic dwellings, from humble huts or farmhouses, to the palaces and mansions. The ritual meal is done in a regally dressed in which they live and dead company. Each town and region offers a variety of designs and ideas for this event, but all with the same purpose: to receive and feed the guests, and live (or perhaps "conmorir") with them. "

RINAS FROM HURRICANE TO A TROPICAL STORM

This year everyone on the Island was watching and waiting for what looked like to be a category 3 hurricane coming directly for the island. On Monday Oct 24th everyone was watching with a close as eye to what was happening with Rina. By Tuesday the hurricane looked to be getting stronger and seemed to be moving slowly which makes it even more of a threat. Wednesday rolled around and Rina seemed to be dying off and turning into a strong tropical storm. By Thursday evening we started to feel the effects with major rain and tropical storm type winds. It seems that the Hurricane gods were with Cozumel and helped us dodge another bullet. It’s amazing how every time there is a threat of a hurricane the whole island pulls together and really makes a great effort to help one another get prepared and ready for the worst. This really shows Cozumel’s true colors when there is a potential threat, everyone pulls together and lends a helping hand. It makes me proud to say that I live in Cozumel.
