Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead

November 1-2, 2013

Day of the Dead, 'Dia de los Muertos' is celebrated near the popular holiday Halloween, so the two are often associated. But the Day of the Dead is very different from Halloween and not creepy like the name may suggest. Mexicans celebrate on November 1st and 2nd for their loved ones that have passed. Alters are set up in homes and are filled with flowers, and favorite foods of the loved ones and the entire family and friends join in the celebration. There is a tradition of the "Bread of the Dead" it is a sweet bread flavored with vanilla and orange and is normally served with hot chocolate. Cozumel offers a unique way of celebrating the Day of the Dead with folkloric dances, painted faces with the sugar skull , and head dresses!

PROPOSED 2014 TAX LAW

The Mexican government has proposed increasing the Cozumel 11% sales tax known as IVA to 16% beginning January 2014 to match the rate in Mexico City.  They agreed to remove the sales tax from food and medicine, but there are other controversial items that are on the table for discussion.  They are talking about implementing the sales tax on property purchases.  So, if you were considering purchasing a property in Cozumel or anyplace in Mexico, you might want to try to make that purchase and close before January 2014 to save the sales tax that will possibly be made into law.  I have talked to several accountants that say it does look like it will be become law, but banks, notario’s, real estate companies among a few are petitioning it not to happen.

AMAR FRIENDS FOUNDATION
is a registered Mexican Non-profit organization.

After a full year of working with retirees living in Mexico to establish and build a new Mexican Foundation called the AMAR Friends Foundation, the non-profit arm of AMAR, "Asociacion Mexicana de Asistencia en el Retiro" headed by Mr. Javier Govi. (amar.org.mx).

Amar Friends Foundation is a member-driven, not-for-profit independent, Mexican organization that promotes senior-friendly infrastructure and eco-friendly sustainable development in Mexico. For the 1.5 million foreign full-time and part-time residents of Mexico, AMAR works to inform good public policy in Mexico and collaborates with others in our counties of origin for issues of importance to expats.

We are promoting study, research, and information exchange regarding the issues, trends, and contributions of the Americans and Canadians 50+ living, retiring, and spending significant time in Mexico. We are also happy to be working with many Mexican-American and Latinos rediscovering their familial homeland as a part-time or full-time retirement destination!

There are several practical issues we examine to inform advocacy and good policy development here in Mexico, as well as supporting efforts aimed at US and Canadian policies for their retiree populations abroad.

In our events we highlight for the Mexican authorities and policy makers the charitable work of North Americans, and the many wonderful music, cuisine, art, and cultural contributions being developed throughout Mexico in this new Mexican-Americans cultural context. AMAR offers its members accurate and up to date information, seminars, conferences, and a network of organizations who assist the experienced resident, the novice migrant, and the frequent traveler to Mexico.

If you live in Mexico, spend much time in Mexico, are thinking of retiring in Mexico, or are a frequent visitor to Mexico, I believe that this organization will be important to you.

SEPTEMBER TRASHY EVENT CLEANS BEACH AND SAVES LIVES

Well OK... that headline might be a little dramatic, but during our September event members picked up a whopping 32 bags of trash off an east side beach, and 7 baby turtles lives were saved after they were discovered trapped within some rock. The tiny tortugitas rushed off into the surf after delivering multiple high fives of gratitude to their rescuers. Seeing their adorable little faces served as a poignant reminder of why we try so hard to keep Cozumel's beaches and turtle nesting grounds protected and free of trash.

Thanks to our great friends at Cozumel Bar Hop, we were joined by several new friends who enjoyed free transportation to the event, as well as 3 more fun filled stops along Cozumel's famous east side. Thanks to Tom and his entire team for promoting the Trashy Group and supplying us with tons of swag to give away at our events. If you're ever looking for a fantastic fun filled day without the hassle of renting a car and driving yourself around - try the Cozumel Bar Hop and let them do the driving for you (bonus: enjoy all the cervezas and margaritas you want!). Big thanks as always to our friend Elisa at PASA for helping cart away both the recyclables and the garbage. We were done in a flash thanks to so many participants. Kudos everybody!

As always, our events are made even more fun by our generous sponsors, most of whom make a standing donation of a gift certificate every month, providing a fun little reward for our volunteers. Do we do it for the prizes? Heck No. Is it super fun to find a great hidden treasure on the beach? YOU BET! Please join us in thanking the following Trashy Friends - stop into their businesses sometime, and let them know you appreciate their support:
Buccanos
Cariloha and Del Sol Shops
Guidos and Guidos Tienda
La Choza
La Hach
Papa Hogs Hogtown Cafe
Señor Frogs
Albatros Charters
Cozumel Bar Hop

We invite you to visit the Trashy Little Group on facebook and keep up with all our reports and efforts. View our files to find tips, reports, and chart the progress of one of Cozumel's most active Eco-minded groups. Join us at our next event on October 27th, and you too will be hooked on trash!
