Cozumel releases sea turtles before and after Hurricane Grace
Approximately 7,500 baby sea turtles were released into the sea prior
to the arrival of Hurricane Grace, leaving environmental officials to
protect 120 nests.
Mauricio Martin Mendoza, the Deputy Director of Ecology for Cozumel
said that as soon as the monitoring for Grace began, they began rescue
work to protect 120 nests from inevitable strong waves.
“According to nest rescue protocols, rescues were being made of those
that already had hatched and of those that already had an incubation
process of more than 30-35 days that were at risk due to the increase in
waves,” he explained.
Prior to the arrival of the hurricane, approximately 7,500 baby
turtles were released from 65 nests. That figure was in addition to the
more than 800 nests that have hatched naturally so far this season.
Martin Mendoza said that rescue efforts included the participation of
the several island brigades, and that after the hurricane passed, 943
more loggerhead and green sea turtle hatchlings were released.
He noted that a few hours after the passing of Grace, several adult turtles had arrived to nest in the eastern portion of the island.

Project to repair Cozumel sinkhole to take
six weeks reports mayor
Work to repair a sinkhole near Playa Caletita has begun, reported Cozumel mayor Pedro Joaquin Delbouis.
“The City Council has already completed the studies and this week,
the State Public Works Secretariat headed by the engineer William
Conrado, began the work for which we appreciate the patience of the
community,” he said in a press release.
Joaquin Delbouis reported that the project to repair the sinkhole on
Rafael E. Melgar Avenue includes involvement from the Federal
Electricity Commission (CFE) who are reviewing area wiring to avoid an
electricity cut. He also said that the Potable Water and Sewerage
Commission (CAPA) has been conducting hydraulic studies for a month.
According to information provided by the Ministry of Public Works,
Joaquin Delbouis says the repair project will last approximately six

Mexico approves Sinopharm for emergency use
Mexico City, Mexico — The Federal Commission for the Protection
against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has approved the vaccine Sinopharm for
emergency use in Mexico.
The Comité de Moléculas Nuevas (CMN) met August 23 on the use of the
Sinopharm vaccine where it was voted. After integrating the opinion of
the CMN, the request for authorization for emergency use was presented
to the Sanitary Authorization Commission where personnel analyzed the
files, certifying that the vaccine complies with the quality, safety and
efficacy requirements necessary to be applied.
Sinopharm, which was prequalified by the World Health Organization
(WHO) on May 7 of this year, was requested by Laboratorios de Biológicos
y Reactivos de México SA de CV (Birmex) for application in people over
18 years of age.

Cozumel installs covid lab test at ferry terminal
The lab provides both antigen and PCR testing
Travelers on the island of Cozumel will now be able to undergo a
Covid-19 test prior to ferry boarding. The news came from the general
director of the Comprehensive Port Administration of Quintana Roo,
(APIQROO) who says starting February 18, the ferry terminal at Cozumel
will begin operating its portable lab.
APIQROO head Alicia Ricalde Magaña says the Cozumel maritime terminal
will have a Marko Teck Laboratory module from where tests can be
carried out to detect the presence of the virus. She said that the port area of Cozumel is one more option for
international tourists who are in need of a negative covid test to
return to the country of origin. The portable lab will be able to
provide antigen test results in about 20 minutes and PCR test results in
about two hours.
