HONOR MONTH FOR THE TRASHY GROUP, AND ECOALERTA PARTNERS
ADD 25 BAGS TO THE 2012 BAG COUNTER
______________________________________________

The month of August was an "Honor" month for the Trashy Group, and the call went out for members to get out on their own to pick up a bag or two of trash. The group responded with 9 bags from individual efforts. Big thanks to those who got out there and pitched in.

EcoAlerta members also met at the pier area on the north end of the island for a clean up on August 26th. This charming area is laced with fishing boats, and inhabited by adorable pygmy raccoons. They are extremely tame, and came right over to us say hello. Of course they are hoping for a treat, and quickly tired of our company if there was no treat forthcoming. We had an apple and became fast friends as these adorable creatures took pieces right out of our hands. Sadly, this area is awash in trash from people who litter and some debris that washes up on the shore. The EcoAlerta Team filled 16 big bags with trash, and left our furry friends with a much nicer home to enjoy. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful start to any Sunday morning. I recommend anyone to take a drive up as far as the north potholed road will take you (keep going north past the Golf Course) , bring some fruit and a trash bag, and enjoy that amazing experience. Plan to bring the full trash bag out with you and dispose of properly. The bag counter now sits at 526 bags for 2012 - over half way to our 1000 bag goal!

The September Trashy Little Event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th when we will be meeting at 9 am on the waterfront near the Blue Angel Hotel. Come out and enjoy the morning giving back to the island, meeting new friends, and finding great prizes! Join the Trashy Little Group on facebook and get involved today.

Mexico's Independence Day

In the early nineteenth century Mexico began talking about a revolt against Spain, a priest by the name of Miguel Hidalgo from Delores was a leader of one of the rallying groups. He then rallied the congregation to fight, giving a speech known as the "Gritode Delores" or the "Cry of Delores", and the crowd responded with bursts of "Viva Mexico" and Viva La Independencia".
These famous words are still remembered and are said each year as towns and cities across Mexico celebrate independence day.

*****A nationwide festival celebrating Mexican Independence Day. On September 15****

Local residents and visitors congregate around the City Hall to participate in the traditional “grito,” or cry for independence.

Led by the Mayor of Cozumel from the balcony at City Hall at 11:00 p.m., the cry “Viva Mexico” is made. Following the “grito” is an impressive fireworks display and other festivities including traditional foods as well as musical and folkloric dance performances.

*****On September 16, Independence Day, the celebrations continue with a parade that goes through Cozumel’s downtown waterfront. Throughout the week, residents and visitors are invited to visit a fair near the City Hall that includes food stands, games, dancing and shopping.

Impacts of the Eolic Project on the Island of Cozumel

Academic institutions and non-profit organizations, presented their commentaries about the project, " Parque Eolico Cozumel" where they warn us about a series of consequences that put a zone with great ecological value in tremendous risk.

This project has severe consequences and will cause a permanent negative impact to the island and its ecosystems, that is why the experts consider that this project should not be authorized by SEMARNAT.

The academic institutions and the non-profit organizations after analyzing the project that the developer presented to the authorities for consideration, detected a series of negative ecological impacts that the Eolic Park will cause to the environment and to the local human population.

Some of the more severe impacts, would be to the endemic populations and their habitats leaving them in critical danger of extinction, also the destruction of the mangrove areas, and risks to the human population and the urban infrastructure of Cozumel in the case of accidents caused by or due to hurricanes that affect the area of Cozumel.

Locals attend Mass and participate in daily parades wearing colorful traditional clothing. On the last day, a fleet of fishermen carries the statue in a sea parade, throwing flowers into the ocean as they motor along.
