The August Trashy Little Event took place on August 7th and we are happy to report that 50 big bags of trash were removed from the beach just north of the Rasta Bar on Cozumel's eastern shore. Seen here are a couple of the photos from when we first started cleaning this area in May, and then shots from after the August event. What a HUGE difference we are making in this area. During the event, Michael and Jennifer Lewis happened upon two baby turtles trapped in a rocky pool. The lucky fellows were taken to the conservation authorities and set free that evening. Mexico's Independence

In Mexico, initially the movement that developed between 1808 and 1821 was not rural but urban multiethnic and multisocial, led by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The leader gave the Grito of independence in Dolores, Guanajuato on September 15th, 1810. The movement spread across the Bajio region, attracting more than one hundred thousand peasants ragged followers, been defeated by the royal army and executed in Chihuahua on 1811.

After the death of Hidalgo, the insurgency's leadership was assumed by the priest José María Morelos, organizing armed groups and the Revolutionary Army, officially declared independence from Mexico on November 6, 1813 and accepted all achievements of the Constitution. Unfortunately the conservative absolutism returned to Spain and all liberals were persecuted and imprisoned. The Viceking Calleja defeated Jose Maria Morelos movement, suppressed the insurgents and use the iron fist against all the fighters for independence.

Other patriots continued with the popular movement for independence, yet it was useless because the royalist forces crushed them.

In this context of political changes on the peninsula, Agustín de Iturbide proposed the Plan of Iguala on 1821, whereby the succession of Mexico proposed as a separate rule, with constitutional monarchy with a triple guarantee: independence, religious freedom, union of Mexican and Spanish.

Our real estate market is tied very closely with what is going on in the US, this is why our prices are down. When people's situation in the US changes, some have had to sell quickly, thus they have had to reduce their prices. Most of these great deals are drying up. We have actually had more Mexican and Canadian buyers than US recently. We have also seen an increase in sales and rentals from people in the Medical tourism industry which is growing here. What a lovely, less expensive place to come have your surgery done and convalesce.

I love Cozumel. The beautiful, crystal turquoise water, tropical fish, and friendly people have not changed in the almost 30 years that I have been coming to the island. It's still very safe and the people are wonderful. Our infrastructure has grown tremendously and there is almost nothing we can't get here on the island, making it a wonderful place to live year round. The big change is you see almost no VW bugs anymore and many nice Mercedes, Hummers, BMW's, high end sport utility vehicles are everywhere. That's probably one of the biggest shocks for someone that hasn't been to Cozumel in awhile.

Our summers, while hot, are nothing compared to the intense heat in Texas and Arizona for example, and there's always that beautiful, crystal clear water you can get in to cool off. We are still a laid back beautiful Caribbean island that you should come and explore soon.
