While Cancun and Riviera Maya regress to orange,
Cozumel will continue in yellow

Despite the epidemiological light rollback to orange for the northern portion of the state, the mayor of Cozumel says the island will continue to operate at a yellow level.

Cozumel mayor Pedro Joaquín Delbouis says that thanks to favorable indicators, the island’s economic activities will carry on according to the criteria of the yellow epidemiological light next week. His announcement was made a day after state Governor Carlos Joaquín González reported the northern region rollback. Joaquin says that for the week of January 25, the Cancun, Riviera Maya region will regress backward to an orange epidemiological light due to the number of increased Covid-19 cases.

Pedro Joaquín Delbouis says that although Cozumel will not follow in the color change, island residents are asked to continue respecting the state’s health safety and hygiene measures. “Today, the three base indicators that govern the epidemiological light are hospital occupancy, in which we register an average of 10 percent, a reduced number of deaths, which since December and so far in January we have not had a significant increase, as well as a drop in positive cases detected daily, as is currently registered in Cozumel,” explained the mayor...READ MORE

Cozumel reef restoration project continues to be success

The fragments are being planted to repopulate and expand the Acropora Palmata coral species.

He reported that despite the 2020 storms and hurricanes, there were only minor effects and the second stage of this project was still able to move forward. The second stage, he said, consists of separating the branches of the corals to plant them throughout of 521 linear meters of the coast of Chankanaab, with which they intend to continue with the restoration of the coral ecosystem in Cozumel. The biologist emphasized that the Reef Restoration Program is of great environmental impact and has been successfully restoring the reef ecosystem, as well as providing social ecological awareness on its care and restoration.. Cozumel sends over 28 tons of tires to recycling plant

 

The Recyclable Materials Collection Centre of Cozumel transferred 28.5 tons of tires to a processing plant in Tabasco. The Deputy Director of the recycling centre, Adeb Zapata Silva, reported that they loaded a truck heading to the Geocycle processing plant where the tire waste will be transformed into alternative fuel.

“These items are collected as part of the Zero Tires, Isla Cozumel program,” he said adding that anyone can deposit tires within the facilities of the Collection Center.
