Crime "FREE" Cozumel -vs- Mexico Drug Crime and US Crime
Do you know your cities crime statistics? Recent dreadful news of crime waves throughout other areas of Mexico have travelers and investors worried. Statistics for 2008 are not yet available, but Cozumel's roughly 90,000 inhabitants continue to enjoy a safe friendly environment, where violence and fear are simply not part of our world.
Cozumel belongs to the state of Quintana Roo, one of Mexico's 32 states. The state of Quintana Roo accounts for only 2% of all reported crime in Mexico. Furthermore, Cozumel Island, accounts for only 7% of all reported crime in the state. We were surprised to see in our research, that there were 5 homicides reported in 2007. Then we discovered that "homicides" for reporting purposes included suicides and traffic deaths.
The US population is roughly 2.88 times larger than that of Mexico while the rate of drug related homicides in the US is 5.71 times larger. If Mexico had the same population as the US and the rate of homicides grew accordingly Mexico would have a little more than 20,000 homicides. Therefore, it could be said that the rate of drug related homicides in the US is practically twice as large as that of Mexico.
Statistics for 2008 will likely reflect escalations in crime in other areas of Quintana Roo and across Mexico. The problem is real and tragic for many. Thankfully, Cozumel remains insulated and as safe and tranquil as ever.
