Cozumel Carnaval 2023 Last Week of February – First Week of March Stay tuned for Set Dates!

 

 

 

Body of dwarf orca washes up on eastern Cozumel island.

 

 

Environmental authorities of Cozumel were alerted to the discovery of a dead dwarf orca. On Monday, the carcass was found by a citizen on a beach area in the eastern part of the island.

Rafael Chacón Díaz, the Director of the Center for Environmental Conservation of the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel, confirmed the discovery. He reported that the small whale specimen was located around 600 meters north of Mezcalito on the eastern side of Cozumel island.

He said the body has since been removed for an autopsy to determine the cause of its death, which once determined, will be reported to Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa). Link here.

 

 

Three of Cozumel’s busy viewpoints
reopened after months of repairs

 

 

 

Three island viewpoints of Cozumel have been opened to the public after being repaired. On Thursday, Mayor Juanita Alonso Marrufo inaugurated the opening of the viewpoints.

The three newly renovated points include Chumul, Chen-Rio and San Martín, which were in poor condition due to the passage of tropical storms and lack of maintenance.

Prior to the cutting of the inaugural ribbon at the Chumul beach viewpoint, the mayor of Cozumel stressed the importance of the renovations since they are some of the island’s most busy beach areas for both tourists and residents.

She elaborated that the project was in left in charge of the Director of Public Works, Carlos Daniel Pomol Gómez, who reported a cost of 998,630 pesos to renovated the viewpoints, which was carried out with resources from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat)..Read more>>

 

 

 

 

 

Pink Flamingos return to Punta Sur Ecotourism Park of Cozumel

The Punta Sur Ecotourism Park of Cozumel has had its first arrival of pink flamingos this season. Before the arrival of the winter season, the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park registered the presence of the first flock of pink flamingos in the X’tacún lagoon, birds that have become another tourist attraction.

The director of Punta Sur, Jesús Benavides Andrade, explained that their arrival is an indicator of the good state of conservation and balance of the ecosystem in the Protected Natural Area.

He mentioned that more and more flamingos are arriving at the lagoon since these birds, which are emblematic of the Yucatecan Peninsula, find a safe place to shelter and feed during the season.
