Cozumel Christmas

Sunday, December 2nd kicks-off the Cozumel Christmas Celebration that runs straight until January 6th, with the arrival of Dia de los Reyes Magos (The Day of the 3 Wise Men).

The theme for this year´s celebration is “Navideña Mexicana” and at 7pm on December 2nd the official Christmas Tree, colorfully decorated with piñatas and candies, will be lit on the Plaza Del Sol while the onlookers are serenaded by traditional mariachis.

Santa is also rumored to be in attendance, ready to take all of the childrens' letters back to the North Pole and to snap a few photos.

Another reason that the Holidays are so lively in Cozumel is the Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most popular celebrations in Mexico and Cozumel. Cozumeleños are very devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe and every year an island-wide celebration takes place Cozumelenian style. The celebration kicks off on the first day of December with a pilgrimage led through the island, by a variety of religious and non-religious organizations, to the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On December 9, groups embark on another pilgrimage to the parish and celebrate a Thanksgiving mass. The festivities continue with a race around the island on December 11, with adults, youths and children joyfully participating. The race begins at the Guadalupe Parish, crossing through the island to return to the Parish in time for a festival full of delicious regional foods, folkloric dances and musical performances. The celebration includes the traditional mariachi bands singing to the Virgin, Patroness of Mexico and Empress of America, throughout the day. On December 12 several masses are held in the Parish and celebrations with regional foods, dance and music continue until the performances of the apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Torch-bearing runners as well as hundreds of vehicles will depart from Virgin of Guadalupe church where they will receive a blessing. The faithful will then make their way down 65th Avenue to Benito Juarez, heading to the municipal pier. From the pier, runners will take the coastal road heading south until they come to the cross-island road, which will bring them back to Guadalupe Church

2008 Garbage and property taxes are due, and if paid by mid December, you will receive a 20% discount. Remember, you cannot send a check to the Palacio Municipal, and they will not be sending you a bill. Here, you have to go in person to first stand in line for your bill, and then another line to pay. Cozumel Living will offer this service again this year for a service charge of $50 USD. Contact us if you will need our help with this, or if you are a new owner and need assistance in changing the name on your tax records from the previous owner.
