Christmas in Cozumel - "La Rama"

Christmas in Mexico is one of the most important holiday's, as well as in the rest of the world, Mexico has its own traditions and forms to celebrate it.
La Rama or The Branch, is one of the most characteristic traditions that takes place between the 16 to the 24 of December. La Rama is celebrated in Veracruz and throughout the Yucatan were one or several leafy branches of any tree (they can be different) are adorned. The differences occur in the rhymes and songs that honor the Virgin of Guadalupe. The adornments can be lights of paper or orange peel, chains of colored papers, globes, small toys, etc.; similar to the Christmas Tree. In the evening children walk from house to house asking if you would like to hear "La Rama". With a positive answer verses are sung for small monetary donations.

"Cozumel Real Estate to Welcome Home Peace Voyage"

After successfully crossing the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to reach her destination in Greece, the "peace ship" Zamná started her journey
back to Cozumel again, last week. The Cozumel real estate market is sure to give her a warm welcome home. In August, the magnificent wooden trimaran
set sail from Cozumel on a 4½ month sea voyage to Greece and back, via 15 ports in North America, Europe and Africa. Vital Alsar Ramírez, a wise and
much-honored Spanish sailor of 75 years, dreamed up the project in his adopted home in Veracruz, México. The journey's purpose is beautifully simple: to take
a child from the home of the great Mayan civilization in Mexico half-way across the world to deliver a message of peace to his kindred in Greece, cradle of another
of the world's great civilizations. Juan Pablo Tec Chim, the Mayan messenger from the Cozumel real estate market, thanked the crowd for their support in the
Greek port of El Pireo, before the crew started its journey back to Cozumel under the watchful eye of Captain Alsar. "We will not allow any more marginalization
due to differences in race, language, thought, disabilities, religion or social status", Tec Chim said, "love, which is so missing in the world, should be transmitted so
there are no conflicts between human beings." The ship is a unique handcrafted wooden masterpiece, 110 feet (33.5m) long and boasting three masts, she was built
by a team of 40 skilled ship makers in Veracruz. Egyptian, Greek and Mexican influences are visible in the design and the windows are decorated with images that mimic Mayan art. In a boost for Cozumel real estate, the island was declared as "Island of Peace" earlier this year due to its freedom from conflict since ancient
Mayan times. Because of this honor, the island became a partner in Alsar's maritime project, now known as "The Child, the Sea and Peace".


"Property Taxes on Mexico Real Estate"

One of the great advantages of buying real estate in Mexico is that the property taxes are a bargain compared to property taxes in the US.
For example a $850,000 home on the island of Cozumel that was featured in the New York Times has a annual property tax of just $300.
According to Mexico Matters property taxes on a $250,000.00 home will typically not exceed $150.00 per year. The Mexican government does not view
property taxes as a main source of revenues, but rather keeps them low to encourage home ownership. The low property taxes in Mexico can save you
thousands of dollars a year, which makes Mexico real estate an attractive and potentially profitable investment.

Global Property Guide states that “property tax is levied on the cadastral value (assessed value) of the real estate. The tax rate ranges from 0.275% to 1.350%,
depending on the property location as each state has a different tax rate. It is payable to the state government annually.” So while the exact property taxes can vary
from location to location, overall they are significantly lower than in the US. You will also have to pay some additional fees that you wouldn’t pay in the US, such as
the maintenence fee on the required bank trust or fideicomiso, which typically runs about $500, but this is often much less than the savings you will receive from lower property taxes.

Royal Caribbean International officially named its newest cruise ship "Oasis of the Seas" on November 30, 2009 during an elaborate maritime celebration
designed especially for the world's largest and most revolutionary cruise ship. An architectural marvel at sea, she spans 16 decks, encompasses 225,282 gross
registered tons, carries 5,400 guests at double occupancy, and features 2,700 staterooms. As the ultimate expression of Royal Caribbean's legacy of imagination
and innovation, Oasis of the Seas introduces unique industry "firsts" including a neighborhood concept - seven main themed areas providing guest's with the opportunity
to seek out relevant experiences based on their personal style, preference or mood. Within these seven neighborhoods - Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, Pool & Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone. Among these extraordinary elements are the first living park at sea;
a thrilling zip line that races diagonally nine-decks above an open-air atrium; an original handcrafted carousel; 28 multilevel urban-style loft suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows; an amphitheater-style theater that serves as a pool by day and a dazzling ocean front theater by night; and an array of epicurean innovations that allow for new culinary experiences each day.

Marking the finale of 10 days of preview sailings, the naming ceremony provided Royal Caribbean the opportunity to give back to the community, doubling as a one-night inaugural celebration-fundraiser to benefit the non-profit Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Celebrities including NBA legend Michael Jordan, Corbin Bleu of High School Musical and Olympic gymnast, Oasis godmother Shawn Johnson and Dancing With the Stars professional dancer, Karina Smirnoff were in attendance, granting the wishes of several children that wanted to meet them. Royal Caribbean has enjoyed a long relationship with Make-A-Wish. Since 2000, the cruise line has hosted more than 1,300 children who wished to go on a cruise to destinations around the world and has contributed more than $2.8 million in in-kind services and $372,000 in discount savings through its Wishes at Sea program.

The ship will sail from her home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and is scheduled to make her first appearance in Cozumel on May 6, 2010.

On November 29, 2009 2,000 athletes from all over the world participated in the Ironman triathlon in Cozumel. A few days prior arriving competitors, media,
and spectators were met with windy conditions and strong currents. On race day, thankfully, the island woke to calmer winds and more amenable conditions.
Nearing the end of a tough economic year this sold out event brought a much needed wave of tourism. It was a beautiful day that perhaps symbolically shown
the return of the festive and joyous pulse Cozumel is accustomed to.
