Trashy Little Group Teams with Tip the Island Crew for February Events

A huge stretch of beach just south of Playa Bonita was picked clean of trash and marine debris by approximately 50 energetic volunteers on Monday February 11. The Trashy Group members were joined by Jana Fisher and her Second Annual Tip the Island party goers. Many new faces and lots of smiles all contributed to a very special morning along this breathtaking beach area - now returned to its natural splendor. A grand total of 66 bags of unsightly trash removed from our precious beaches and turtle nesting grounds. Thanks to all who made it out for this beautiful morning - and special thanks to Jana Fisher for organizing the Second Annual Tip the Island Party.

Other group members, led by Kari Taylor Atkins of the Blue Angel Scuba School and the University of Alberta dive group collected 32 bags from the beach south of El Mirador. These and other individual efforts brought the Bag Counter up to 194 bags so far in 2013. Thanks go out to PASA and our wonderful prize sponsors for February:

Cozumel Carnaval 2013 King and Queen winners were Pedro Koyoc Pérez and Rosmery Shultz Caamal.
Cozumel Carnaval Junior King and Queen winners were Mauro Reinoso and Isabel Zetina Vivas.

Large crowds turned out Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday for the Carnaval parades and festivites. Every year we are impressed by the amount of effort and time people put into their floats and how they turn out. “I think it’s really become a tradition for those who participate and those who come out to watch."

Happy Easter - March 31, 2013

For Mexico, the Easter holidays are a combination of Semana Santa (Holy Week — Palm Sunday to Easter Saturday) and Pascua (Resurrection Sunday until the following Saturday).

For most Mexicans, this 2 week period is the time of year for holiday vacations (good time to not be on the highways — just stay put and enjoy the community of your choice during this holday season).

Holy Week celebrates the last days of the Christ's life. Easter is the celebration of the Christ's Resurrection. It is also the release from the sacrifices of Lent.

In many communities, the full Passion Play is enacted from the Last Supper, the Betrayal, the Judgement, the Procession of the 12 Stations of the Cross, the Crucifixion and, finally, the Resurrection. In some communities, flagellation and/or real crucifixion is included. The enactments are often wonderously staged, costumed and acted, with participants preparing for their roles for nearly the full year leading up to Semana Santa.

Help Create a Children's English Book Section in the Municipal Library & Make A Change in a Child's Future

by Nancy Murray

One of the things that, down the road, can dictate a young Cozumel student’s earning potential is their level of proficiency in English. While many children are taught English at school, they do not have anyone with whom to “practice” their budding second language. This is something that the ex-pat community as well as American visitors to the island can change. With the support of DIF Estatal, and Tomás Celis Quintal, the Director of Cozumel’s ONLY public library “Biblioteca Pública Municipal. Prof. Gonzalo de Jesús Rosado Iturralde" plans are in the works to open a English Children’s Book Section. In conjunction with this new area for the kids, we will be looking for volunteers to read aloud, and to help assist with homework, and basic conversation skills.

How can you help? If you are headed to Cozumel, and have some space in your bag, bring down some used children’s books! On the Island with an hour or two to spare? Sign up to read at story hour or to help with homework. This is a very simple thing that can make a big difference in a child’s life – and you know that YOU made a difference in a child’s life.

The date of the Grand Inauguration will be towards the end of April – tune in here when we have the date confirmed. We hope to have a party on the grounds of the Library to celebrate – anyone interested in helping out can contact or Laura Wilkinson via
