Cozumel Living Supports Beach Clean-up efforts

The Trashy Little Group held its February Trashy Event on February 27th. It was a glorious Sunday morning for the Trashy Little facebook group who removed more than 32 large bags of plastic and other trash just south of Playa Bonita on Cozumel's eastern shore. Several prizes were found by participants. Islander Deanna C. won a gift certificate for a complimentary pedicure from Katie Jackson of Blu Bambu Salon.Spa. Denny, visiting from Colorado, found a one of a kind sea glass necklace created by Cozumel's own extremely talented sea glass jewelry designer, Joan Roberts. Peggy, another Colorado visitor to the island last week, was rewarded with a surprise gift certificate for a free massage from Sally Hurwitch, owner of Barefoot in Cozumel. Ed and Peggy Baxter found a surprise dinner for two from Adrian Angulo of Especias Restaubar! Even Kathy Watts the group founder had a secret prize waiting for her in the sand. Group members Rebecca Hoppert and Laura Bishard created a big Trashy sign to track our progress throughout the coming year. After the beach cleanup members and supporters enjoyed a fantastic Sunday Brunch on Kathy's patio back in town.

The March Equinox Explained

The March equinox will occur on March 20, 2011, marking the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere and fall (autumn) in the southern hemisphere from an astronomical viewpoint. The March equinox will occur at 23:21 (or 11:21 pm) at Coordinated Universal time (UTC) on this date.

The word "equinox" derives from the Latin words meaning "equal night" and refers to the time when the sun crosses the equator. At such times, day and night are everywhere of nearly equal length everywhere in the world.

It is important to note that while the March equinox marks the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere, it is the start of autumn in the southern hemisphere.

"The Underwater Heritage"

COZUMEL, March 2 .- This Wednesday inaugurated the event promoted by UNESCO, called "technical and legal challenges of Underwater Heritage in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, whose purpose is to create awareness in the states for the conservation of archaeological remains lying on the seabed so that future generations can know, "said Tatiana Villegas, Assistant for Special Programs of Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean of UNESCO.

The event took place at popular hotel south of the city, at 10 am on Wednesday, was attended by local authorities, representatives of twelve countries, and will culminate on Thursday.

Tatiana Villegas reported that the objective of the workshop will last two days is to unify criteria regarding the preservation of archaeological remains that lie at the bottom of the sea, under the agreement made in 2001 by UNESCO with the participating countries that signed at the time the convention but which came into force until 2009.

The idea of preserving the remains is because 40 years from the date the activity of diving has been a major boom, which enables many people to plunge into the sea, and to exactl where the wrecks are. These are at risk by the very presence of humans.

He said the seabed remains well preserved with the absence of oxygen. Oxygen feeds the organics that can destroy wood, rope, among others. As long as the remains are covered by the water and a layer of sediment.

The remains are protected. When removed without the appropriate technical experts and scientific expertise, you run the risk that these gems will be lost.

In his view, the creation of awareness among the various water service providers authorities, seeking to preserve the remains is important because if found, could be placed in a museum or area of tourism visit the ruins respecting the remains and preserving them for people to view.

Ninety percent of these discoveries worldwide have been made by divers and fishermen and not by archaeologists.

Friday they willsign agreements with the consortium of Hotel Presidente Intercontinental, the City of Cozumel and Fonatur (the National Fund for Tourism Development) to start the construction of the entrance to the Marina Cozumel. The project is funded by the federal agency, FONATUR.

The news was confirmed Monday by the mayor, Juan Carlos González Hernández, who made the announcment signalIing the completion of work that began April 2, 2008. The director general of Fonatur, Rosa Adriana Pérez Quesnel, and senior managers, Presidente Intercontinental Hotel, will be in Cozumel on March 4th to sign the agreement. On August 2010, President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa Pérez Quesnel appointed A new head of the agency, realizing the creation of the Integral Tourism Project (PTI) Marina Cozumel.

The mayor had to overcome nearly two years of conflict with executives of the hotel consortium becasue there was no agreement signed to ensure the construction of the marina. This put at risk an investment of $37.4 billion and another $191 million in private capital. It is estimated that construction work will take five to six months to be concluded. After that begins a process of promoting and selling nationally and internationally, which is sure to attract investors, and the generation of employment and economic benefit.

2011 CARNIVAL Cozumel Island has been a leader of task and social development in the state of Quintana Roo.The oldest and most important event on the island and in all the Yucatan Peninsula is the Carnival. In this massive event, there is no distinction of sex, age, economic status or social class, everybody celebrates together. As history - unofficially – it began 133 years ago, according to a pamphlet published in 1874, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, under the title "La Isla de Cozumel: "The new tropical paradise". L.C.Goodrich, author, wrote: "Everyone is fond of music, dance, fun holidays, which are not few, the revels are innocent...."One person that has devoted his time to historical research is Velio Valdez Vivas, a columnist for life of Cozumel, whom I took up the above quote. Carnival is a derivation from the Italian word "carnevale", which in turn is a shortened form "meat levare". "The celebration of the carnival is variable according to the Catholic Lent. Another significant year is 1896, because data is retained, indicating their official status. In addition to the masked dances, costumed characters roamed the streets with songs and dances, in exchange for drinks and candies. In the year of 1908, the citizen Jose Azueta requested in writing to the municipal government permission to organize at home "two dancess girls", one of mixed race, and to celebrate the carnival. "By the way the authorization was granted, according to Vivas Velio, payment of rights: $ 4.00 pesos for the first and $ 1.50 for the second." Zaida Elimar y Nando Morejón were elected King and Queen for the 2011 Carnival, how they are elected: By presenting a 20minute routine to present their issues and gain the confidence and votes of the public who attend the magic night full of joy and fantasy; and they prepare four costume changes for their dances. Rodhe Tejeda who surprised all with eight costumes, since he presented the 7 wonders of the world and topped with an extra outfit. Ladies Night 25 anniversary, with the tittle of "Silver Ladies" at Ladies Show, which this year celebrates 25 years conducted with the mottive of "Silver Queen ", and on this year was name the empress Mrs. Genny Grace Aguilar, who is one of the founders of this event, which has been going on and on for the past 25 years. On thursday 24th of February at the afternoon 1,300 women wearing the most colorful costumes and disguises, attend the dance of "Ladies Show," which has become a tradition among the women living on the Island. We Cozumel Living women’s were there, at 5 pm waiting to open the doors of the entertaiment center Moby Dick and at 6 the Silver Edition "Ladies Show 2011" started. Amongattendees were Narcedalia Martín de González (Quintana Roos, State Governors wife) and the President of the DIF municipal, Virginia Alcerreca Gonzalez ( wife of the Cozumel mayor ),among other special guests. Although initially the significance of this event was to have a good time, now the goal is to raise funds to be allocated to the Integrated Training Center for Women (CEFIM), an organization that funds education for young professionals women. Sunday, March 6th, 2nd outdoor Parade at 6:30 pm, floats and Free concert of Tropical music with the Sonora Dinamita at Parque Quintana Roo. Monday March 7th, , Free popular dance at Parque Quintana Roo and Parque Benito Juarez Tuesday March 8th, 3rd outdoor Parade at 6:30 pm, floats, special concert show later at Parque Quintana Roo. Wednesday March 9th, Award ceremony and burning of Juan Carnival.
