Cozumel, a small island off of the Eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is a popular destination for tourists year round. Visitors from all over the world flock to the beautiful beaches, amazing snorkeling and relaxing atmosphere.
The one-loop, 1.2-mile swim takes place off the coast in the Caribbean Sea. Following the swim, athletes will embark on the 56-mile bike course from the Chankanaab Park parking lot and finish next to Cozumel’s City Hall in the heart of downtown. The 13.1-mile run course is all flat and paved, and passes many of Cozumel’s signature sites—the waterfront walk, downtown main plaza and historic neighborhoods.

The Mexican island of Cozumel will be the venue of a new test of the Oceanman championship, an international circuit of open water swimming for professional and amateur swimmers on August 6th.

The Caribbean island is the first confirmed event of this circuit in the American continent, which is in its third edition and started this weekend in Malaysia and will be the sixth in chronological order after the tests will be played in Spain (Tabarca and Benidorm), Russia (Sochi), Greece (Oitylo Bay) and Italy (Orta Lake).

Oceanman has managed to become a competition of great sporting and social level, since it has managed to congregate in each one of the venues more than 2,000 people between participants, companions and event organizers, according to emphasized Fermin Egido, director of the test.

“After the experience of last year we had to return. Cozumel is our ambassador in America and one of the most awaited events by participants from all over the world, both for the beauty of the place and for the friendliness and warmth of its people, “explained Egido.

The director of the competition recalled that Cozumel meets “everything” what is asked of an Oceanman headquarters. “It is a paradisiac place to swim, but also has multiple tourist attractions that make it an essential destination,” he explained.

Oceanman will celebrate in each of its venues a long distance test (10 km), a half one (5.5 km) and a popular race (1.5 km), intended for those who wish to start swimming in open sea water.

Each of the circuit events are open to all swimmers individually, although those who will opt for the Oceanman and Oceanwoman World Championship, which will be decided in a final test in a scenario yet to be defined, will do so through the results obtained in the calculation of the other four tests previously held.

The Festival will be held in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

The family-friendly Whale Shark Festival will showcase the time-honored dances, local cuisine, nearby businesses and works from local artisans. Guests can also participate in some of the water activities that have made Isla Mujeres a favorite vacation spot: sport fishing, diving and snorkeling tours of the pristine reefs and of course swimming with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world and an endangered species.
