Vía Verde prepares to go international with its high-tech, vertical gardens

A group of young Mexicans who installed vertical gardens along one of
Mexico City’s busiest roads is preparing to take their urban greening
project around the world.
Four years ago, architect Fernando Ortiz Monasterio collected more
than 85,000 signatures in support of his company’s proposal to install
vertical gardens on the columns that support the elevated section of
Anillo Periférico, the capital’s outer ring road. The Mexico City government agreed to the project – called Vía Verde
(Green Way) – and today the commute of motorists who use the road is far
less gray than it would otherwise be. The gardens also absorb traffic noise and help to reduce air pollution.
The World Economic Forum this year recognized Ortiz and his team as
technology pioneers, which allows them to participate in the
international organization’s initiatives, activities and events for

The need –
Attending a public school is “free”. However, families must furnish the
learning supplies (very expensive to buy locally) plus purchase required
uniforms and shoes. Families who can’t afford these expenses for all
their school age children, may have to decide which children to send to
school or what basic needs to go without (i.e. food, rent/utilities,
health related expenses) to pay for school supplies. Supplies are only
distributed to children “in need” identified by local pastors, Friends of Cozumel volunteers and other local leaders who have personal knowledge of family situations.

Cozumel, Q.R. — An estimated 500 sea turtle nests have been
identified and marked along the island’s coast, keeping both
environmental officials and volunteers busy.
Deputy Director of Ecology, Sandra Dutton Ruíz, says that they have
made tours of the coasts and have located 500 nests. To date, those
nests consist of 266 green turtle nests and 234 loggerhead nests.
She says that monitoring has been increased to ensure a higher survival rate of the hatchlings.
“The monitoring and surveillance is a fundamental tool to safeguard
the species that, year after year, arrive at the littoral of the eastern
part of the island,” she added. Sea turtle season on the island runs
