City of Cozumel working on state land donations to create mountain bike park.

 

The City Council of Cozumel is working on contracts for the donation of state government properties for the creation of a mountain bike park. Cozumel Mayor Juanita Alonso Marrufo said the city is working on signing contracts that would see around 17,000 square meters of land donated.

Marrufo said that the mountain bike park is being built in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood, adding that the city has had the project going since February of this year.

The city is working in coordination with the Strategic Projects Agency of the State of Quintana Roo (Agepro) to carry out the regularization process of 28 properties that have been promised donations.

As of May 16, 11 properties were delivered with documentation that shows Cozumel as the legal owner of the Emiliano Zapata park, public library, the Asterio Tejero baseball field, Francisco Cordero poliforum, a community development center of the Social Development office the Bicentenario”sports unit, the DIF park and María Viana, among other properties..Read more>>

 

 

Long time elderly Cozumel couple to get island’s first sargassum house

 

An elderly couple on the island of Cozumel will be getting a new house this year. The unidentified couple are long time residents of the island. And due to their limited financial resources, were eligible for the new house.

The house they will receive will be one of Omar Vázquez Sánchez’s sargassum houses. Their house, which will be donated in its entirety, will cost around 250,000 peso or approximately $12,500 USD to build. Once complete, it will be the first sargassum house on the island.

The home is being constructed by Vázquez Sánchez’s company BlueGreen. It is part of a joint project that includes several other island organizations who have been organizing events to raise the money needed to help pay for the house..Read more>>

 

 

 

 

Cozumel begins releasing hatched sea turtles from record 3,100 nests

 

Thousands of baby sea turtles are in the process of being released into the sea. The island of Cozumel reports a record number of hatched eggs in the San Martin Camp.

Cozumel Mayor Juanita Alonso Marrufo says on August 15, they began the process of releasing hatched eggs from the camp’s record 3,100 nests.

The deputy director of Ecology, Germán Yáñez Mendoza, said that to date, they have recorded a record of 3,100 nests throughout the San Martín Camp. As the eggs hatch, the babies are released..Read more>>

 

 

 

Cozumel continues with repair of island’s coastal bike paths

 

Work on several sections of a coastal bike path on the island of Cozumel continues reports its mayor Juanita Alonso Marrufo. She says the eastern coast bike path has suffered damage from tropical storms and landslides that have hit the island.

The City of Cozumel also pointed out that the work is being done in consideration of sea turtle season, and is following the established guidelines to avoid interfering with the nesting cycle of the turtles...Read more>>

Cozumel is not only a beach-goer's paradise, it’s also a seasoned IRONMAN host city. Off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, the area has over 14 miles of reefs for exploring, plus archaeological ruins, a national park, and endless expanses of turquoise water and white sandy beaches. 

The 2022 IRONMAN Cozumel offers slots to the 2023 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i.

 

The swimming stage of IRONMAN Cozumel is one of the most spectacular in the world. The great visibility of water and the huge amount of underwater life that accompanies the athletes throughout the course, turns this stage into one unforgettable experience.

Athletes will do 3 laps around the island to complete the 180 kms (112 miles) of the bike course. The route covers amazing Oceanside roads, the great hotel zone and a bit fo the city, This fast and beautiful route guarantees an exciting bike stage, ideal for those who want an IRONMAN PR.

The run course is flat and passes through many of Cozumel’s signature sites, including it’s waterfront walk, downtown main plaza and historic neighborhoods. Hundreds of spectators cover the sidewalks to watch and cheer for the athletes to give their best until they reach the finish line, which is located at the City Hall plaza in downtown Cozumel.
