Facing a 15% tourism surge, downtown Cozumel hotel Stingray Villa has launched a comprehensive environmental conservation program. The initiative includes a new water management system (expected to reduce consumption by 40%), a switch to renewable energy (solar and wind), and a comprehensive waste reduction strategy, including eliminating single-use plastics. “Environmental preservation is essential for Cozumel’s future,” says owner Silvia Lupone. Local environmental groups praise the effort, noting the increasing pressure on the island’s resources. The Cozumel Tourism Board calls it the first such program in the downtown area, hoping it will set a precedent for sustainable tourism. Stingray Villa is a family-owned hotel in downtown Cozumel.

Chacón Méndez says the installation of the submarine cable will expand the energy capacity from 40,000 to 120,000 KVA, something that will provide confidence to those who want to invest in Cozumel.
He says the power increase will ensure a stable and sufficient supply to meet the island’s growing electricity demand, avoiding blackouts and voltage fluctuations.
“If a company wants to come and build a 100-room hotel, it needs the approval of the CFE, and Cozumel does not currently have the capacity to accommodate a hotel load of that size, something that will be resolved with the submarine cabling,” he said.. READ MORE…
