EVENTS OR THINGS TO DO IN MAY 2026 IN COZUMEL

May in Cozumel is a fantastic time to visit. The weather is warming up, the heavy humidity of summer hasn’t fully set in yet, and the island hosts some of its most deeply rooted traditions.

Here is what you can look forward to in May 2026:

1. Festival of El Cedral (Feria del Cedral)

  • Dates: Traditionally late April through May 3, 2026

  • Location: El Cedral Village (South side of the island)

  • The Vibe: This is Cozumel’s oldest tradition, dating back over 175 years. It commemorates the Day of the Holy Cross. You’ll find a mix of a county fair and a religious pilgrimage.

  • What to do: Expect horse racing, traditional dances (like the Baile de la Cabeza de Cochino or Pig’s Head Dance), rodeos, live music, and plenty of local food stalls. The main day of celebration is May 3.

2. Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas (Fishing Tournament)

  • Dates: May 15 – 17, 2026

  • Location: Main Pier / Puerto de Abrigo

  • The Vibe: One of the most prestigious sport-fishing tournaments in the Mexican Caribbean.

  • What to do: Even if you aren’t fishing, the “weigh-ins” at the pier are a major social event. Locals and tourists gather to see the massive Blue Marlin, White Marlin, and Dorado brought in.

3. Seasonal “Things to Do”

  • Sea Turtle Nesting: May marks the beginning of the sea turtle nesting season. While you shouldn’t disturb them, you can often find local conservation groups offering educational tours on the “wild side” (East Coast) of the island at night.

  • Whale Shark Season (Starts late May): Toward the very end of May, the first whale shark tours usually begin departing from the northern area (though they are more common in June/July).

  • Snorkeling & Diving: With the “Nortes” (north winds) gone, the water is crystal clear and calm. It’s the perfect time to visit El Cielo, a shallow sandbar famous for its thousands of starfish.
